What is a community-based TB programme? Print E-mail
  • A community based TB programme supports a clinic's TB programme. A series of treatment supporters administer Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) to patients on simple TB drug regimens (no multi-drug resistant patients or patients beginning re-treatment for TB) and – probably more importantly - provide the patient with support to complete their treatment.

  • These patients remain the responsibility of the clinic - which must keep accurate records of patients in their community programmes and of their treatment supporters.

  • The clinic staff must also meet with treatment supporters regularly to ensure that the programme stays on track.

  • Treatment supporters must live near their patients and the clinic or district must have access to a trainer if the clinic needs new treatment supporters.
